Napa Cellars Chardonnay wins Best of Show

We've loved it from the first sip, but now the world does. It was announced today at Vin Expo in Bordeaux, France that Napa Cellars Chardonnay 2007 was the recipient of a prestigious Trophee de Citadelles. This is the only wine from the US to win one of these 50 prestigious trophies! This is the equivalent of a Gold Medal Best of Show Award. Congratulations to Winemaker Joe Shirley.

This is the "baby Rombaur" we've mentioned in the past. Always available at the Lab and a steal at $14.99.

Tonight, taste lots of wine for $15 ($10 for insider club members)

A few details on the wineries that will be pouring tonight at the Lab (5 - 9 PM):

Buttonwood Farm Winery, Santa Ynez Valley, is an 8,000 case producer out of Los Olivos. They are dedicated strictly to Rhone and Bordeaux varietals.

John Tyler Wines, Russian River Valley, is a partnership between the Heck Family (well known for producing sparkling wines in California) and the Bacigalupi Family (long time California growers who provided some of the Chardonnay fruit to Chateau Montelena that won the famous Paris tasting in the 1970’s). They will be pouring their Russian River Zinfandel and Pinot Noir.

Sierra Madre Vineyards, Santa Maria Valley, are long time growers with a prestigious list of current and former clients include Au Bon Climat, David Bruce, Byron, Fiddlehead Cellars, Hitching Post, Ken Brown, Lane Tanner, LaZarre Wines, Paul Lato, Qupe, Rusack, Sanford Winery, and Wild Horse. Current owner Doug Circle (an Orange County resident) decided to hold back some of their own fruit and produced the first vintage of Sierra Madre with winemaker Ken Volk starting with the 2006 vintage.

Clif Family Winery, Napa, is owned by the producers of Clif Bar, Luna and other nutritious, organic foods. They bring the same passion and commitment to quality to their collection of wines.

All wines will be for sale. Wines & prices posted shortly

Eponymous and RedTree Pinot

A few notable new and returning wines today:

Red Tree Pinot Noir 2008 - Wine Spectator says: "You rarely find the words "excellent" and "inexpensive" in the same sentence as Pinot Noir....we found that rarest of rarities — an $8 Pinot Noir that is an amazing buy, with a very good rating. It’s the 2008 Red Tree California Pinot and in my blind tasting I was wowed by this wine’s elegance, balance and complex mix of baked cherry pie, rhubarb and blueberry flavors."

Eponymous Meritage 2006 - Everyone loved this one until it sold out. One more shipment and then the price goes up. Still $34.99 and one of the best bang for the buck in a Cali-Bordeaux style red.

Maipe Chardonnay 2007 is back in stock! With 15% Viognier added, what a nice refressing white at a great price of $8.99.

Castalia Rochioli Vineyard Russian River Pinot Noir

Three months ago a friend of mine told me that they tasted the Castalia Rochioli Vineyard Pinot Noir at the OC Wine Society Extraordinaire. They gave the winemaker my card and he called me. We rendezvoused at Baja Fresh and I tasted it out of a plastic cup. It was great! I bought a case for the Lab on the spot. Little has sold - probably because of these econ-times. This wine just got some super recognition:

2007 Castalia Rochioli was the highest scoring Pinot Noir in the latest edition of the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine - 96 Points
"This altogether lovely Pinot is among the most polished and most finely balanced bottlings of this issue's gathering, and it is also among the fruitiest. Optimally ripened with nary a hint of sloppy softness, it is all velvet on the palate and is marked at every turn by deep, cherry-like fruit, touches of violet and uncannily well-proportioned oak. As persistent on the palate as it is so very deep in character, it is a compelling look at the varietal that manages to be at one and the same time open and friendly and altogether serious."
